Meditation is one of the most popular stress management strategies — meditation can provide short-term benefits, such as calming the mind, and building resistance to stress over time. Including music in your meditation practice can significantly add to the positive effects of both. It can also bring you greater stress relief.

Musical meditation can feel more relaxing and simple than other forms of practice. Musical meditation is a stress-relieving technique that anyone can use. Here are easy steps to meditate with music that you can try at home:

Choose the type of music you will use in meditation. If you don’t like classic songs, that’s fine. Choose music that really suits you.

Find your most comfortable position. Many people think that the meditation position is just sitting cross-legged on yoga while straightening your back as straight as possible. However, try to find any position, as long as you feel comfortable! After that, close your eyes, relax your muscles, and breathe through your diaphragm. Let your shoulders, stomach, and even the muscles in your face relax. Inhale deeply through your nose, slowly extend your stomach to your chest, then exhale through your mouth.

Stay focused on your music. If you find yourself thinking about other things (or even thinking thoughts about music), redirect your attention back to the present moment, the sound of the music, and the feeling in your body that the music you’re playing makes. Try to really feel the strain.

Continue this exercise consistently. When thoughts enter your head again, let them come and slowly leave. Redirect your attention to the sound of the music, stay mindful, and focus on the sensations in your body that you feel. The purpose of this practice is to calm your inner voice so that it becomes ‘as it should be’. So, just let it be, and immerse yourself completely.
